I guess the word 'sustainable' has been around a lot longer than 'single-use' but I'm sure it wasn't too far behind becoming word of the year. It's great to see that so many people are aware and making changes to their day-to-day lives, to lead a more sustainable lifestyle, as we all have a responsibility to understand our own social and environmental impact, no matter how big or small.
Our goal, in the travel sector, is to ensure that people travel the right way. We all know that flights have a huge carbon footprint but travel & tourism also has many positive impacts and provides 10.4% of global GDP and 9.9% of employment, and it's still growing: 1 in 5 jobs in the last decade were created by the travel and tourism sector, (World Travel & Tourism Council: Travel & Tourism Economic Impact 2018 - March 2018).
So, we can't escape it and nor should we - there are arguments against people flying as much but I find it quite hypercritical as it tends to be from a much older generation, who have already travelled and already gained so much as a result of these first-hand experiences and younger generations deserve the same opportunities. We gain so much through travel, from arts and culture to music, history, fun, play and adventure - not to mention relaxation, time out and most importantly personal development.
Whilst our programmes started with a conservation focus, with elements of culture and community, such as elephant conservation in Sri Lanka or marine conservation in Thailand we quickly realised the opportunity we had to use travel as a transformational platform, and to create change - And, not just change in the places we visited (by actively participating in social and environmental projects) but change within, to help people develop and even more so, to help with mental health and well-being issues.
I'm just touching the surface on a few points here, which I'll dive into deeper in future blogs over the next few months but I thought it was a good time to get people thinking about the way they travel as the xmas season is coming up and many will be setting off to warmer climates - so have a think about the impact that you have as a traveller or tourist but also the impact that the journey and adventure will have on you.
Travel safe ;)
